Project title: Anatomical studies of African Flora, including studies of medicinal bark and other indigenous plants of medicinal and forensic interest

Promoter: Prof. Ben-Erik Van Wyk

Co-promoter: Prof. Patricia M Tilney

Past post-graduate projects:

Post-doc 2013: "Bark anatomy of African genistoid legumes".

Post-doc 2010-2011: "Anatomical studies of African Apiaceae, Araliaceae of selected endemic taxa".

PhD: "Comparative bark anatomy of Araliaceae and related taxa". Research advisor: Alexei Oskolski.

MSc (cum laude): Signal transduction pathways from arginine vasopressin sensitive receptors to outer membrane amoeba Amoeba proteus.

Current Project

Bark covers tree stems and have different appearances and internal structures. Anatomy of the bark is an important source of information for identification of raw material, pharmacognosy, quality control and forensic studies. This project includes the study of the bark of more than 50 South African woody plants.
